SUMMARY:Women’s Foundation of Arkansas Girls of Promise Conference
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Ochoa was the Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston\, TX from 2013 until her retirement in May 2018. She became the first Latina woman to go to space when she flew on a nine-day mission aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993. She has flown in space four times\, logging nearly 1\,000 hours. She currently serves on several boards including as Vice Chair of the National Science Board\, and as chair of the Nomination Evaluation Committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Prior to her astronaut career\, Dr. Ochoa was a research engineer and holds three patents for optical systems. She received a B.S. in Physics from San Diego State University\, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. She is honored to have six schools named for her and has been inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame\, the California Hall of Fame\, and the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.

DESCRIPTION:Girls of Promise\, an initiative of the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas\, exposes girls to opportunities and mentors in STEAM fields. GOP has the goal of increasing the number of women in higher-level STEAM courses\, careers and putting them on the path to achieving economic security as women. The Girls of Promise Conference is open to 8th-grade girls who are interested in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts & Math in Arkansas! Students will spend multiple days learning about various STEAM careers\, enhancing their skills\, and meeting women mentors excelling in their fields. For the safety of our teachers & students\, we are choosing to hold our Girls of Promise virtually during the first week of April 2021. \nFor 2021 we will be hosting our event virtually on April 1st & 2nd. Girls can tune in on our conference from the comfort of their home given that they have access to a phone\, computer\, or tablet that has internet access! All activities will be shown in Zoom format and will be accessed via the app Socio. We will still be keeping all activities from previous years so that girls can still have group teams that they can socialize & communicate with! Anderson today.  This brings the total U.S. membership to 2\,309 and the number of international members to 281. \nElection to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.  Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research\, practice\, or education\, including\, where appropriate\, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology\, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering\, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”  Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. She was the 11th Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston\, from 2013 until her retirement in May 2018. Prior to her astronaut career\, Dr. Ochoa was a research engineer and an inventor\, with three patents for optical systems. Ochoa currently serves on several boards\, including as Vice Chair of the National Science Board. With six schools named for her\, she has been inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame\, the California Hall of Fame\, and the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.
